About

An Indigenous-led day long event created in 2013, this event is designed to educate Canadian people, to promote awareness about the Indian residential school system and the multigenerational impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century. This is a day that honours the children who survived residential school and remembers those who did not. It is a day to learn about and discuss both the legacy and current realities of colonial systems and structures, and to continue the work needed to dismantle them. The event is to honour the lost Children and the Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities, to call for public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools.

In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, QDCAC supports this event by paying for the offered refreshments provided to participants. QDCAC also takes part in the ceremonies and events that take place to honour the residential school survivors.

This program benefits the community members, organizations and volunteers taking part in the event. Most are freely giving time and labour for a community service, it is an inclusive activity and builds connections to community. It is an opportunity to learn about Indigenous Arts and Artists, helps protect mental and physical health while reducing stress. This is needed now during COVID.
